AD DESIGN SHOW : stand outs and resource

ad show 2017 4The annual Ad Design Show in New York City is not just an inspirational collection of artisans, haute homewares and innovations but also a social event on “trade day” for the design community. It is an opportunity to walk the show with colleagues while perusing new offerings over wine and canapes  and share thoughts on the industry. I love the show for the networking and the sheer fun of it but have also come to think of it as a major resource for my business. Noting product that moves me as I see it in person has always been a favorite way to source for jobs. Meeting the makers and distributors, creating relationships and understanding their procedures, policies and lead times is very beneficial for specifying materials and making recommendations to clients. I find it interesting that this show is also open to the public following trade day. The attention the design business gets from magazines, TV shows, and social media of all sorts have made goods from all over the world available to the public. Helping clients put it together and make sure it works is something I really enjoy, sourcing that artisanal piece for a client that really sets the space apart is something I enjoy even more! Shows like the AD Design Show are a great resource for doing just that. This year’s standouts included some amazing radiators that are wall art or are they art that diffuse heat? Hard to say… but innovative and noteworthy for sure. I am always on the lookout for practical but artful storage and some tambour storage cocktail and end tables caught my eye. Porcelain tableware, glassware, glass flowers, dog sculptures, dog beds, the new Steinway player piano, the “urban cultivator” for growing greens in your kitchen, and the new push to open refrigeration from Thermador were some of my other noted items for future use. Creating a home that you love to live in is the goal of all design enthusiasts. As you dream and “pin” and fall in love with that artful piece at a show or that look online or in the “decor” mag you just got, remember there are plenty of professionals like me here to help you connect the dots!

Art Deco

And The Mandatory Ingredients Are…

I am a huge fan of the the show “chopped” on FoodNetwork. The idea of having several ingredients, not of your own choosing, as the highlights of a sumptuous and well presented meal you are to prepare is so intriguing. I always think that it is the other items in the pantry and fridge, chosen by the chef, that rescue the meal.

I felt like one of the surprised “chopped” chefs when interviewing to remodel an east side apartment. “Make it gorgeous, really glamorous!! Make me love it and my husband will be happy. And… make sure we can use my Icarts, my Lalique glass and my French art collection. Oh… And I have a dog, Oscar, he’s a Cotton de Tulear. It has to work for him, too.” Art Deco, loving husband and a cute white dog. The mandatory ingredients worked for me.

This living room is soft and strong. The furniture is large scale and black accents balance the feminine art work. It is my sort of Ying and Yang tribute to classic romance. Creating the floor-plan and balancing new custom couch, heirloom chairs that we reupholstered, cherished accessories and art and new additions became a six month labor of love. The sparkle of the kitchen and the glamour of the master bath became the stuff of legends in the building while we worked. At one point Tal, the head of our contracting crew rolled his eyes at me. “Really, silver guilt on the cabinets? It’s already full of crystal and glitter….” “Do it…” I said and when it was finished he said he would not question my judgement again.

The vision to create an alluring, inviting space that IS my client is one part clairvoyance, one part whimsy, and two parts trust in myself. The way to make the vision a reality is with a true kick-ass contracting team and I thank West Village GC for keeping my trust in the process. The kitchen and bath have been featured in fabulous consumer publication Embark Magazine as Grand Illusion and trade publication K+BB as Art as Life. I look forward to sharing more of the “salon de familie” , the master bedroom and “Oscar’s room”.

What Do Your Furnishings Say About You?

I have always enjoyed perusing the artistic furnishings at ICFF ( International Contemporary Furniture Fair) but this year I found something really special. I found the mythical creature Pan, courtesy of Nick “the bronze” Davis. This incredible table is a true piece of functional art. I believe that good design inspires conversation. I believe that your furnishings say something about you and I know I would love the owner of this whimsical table. I believe that handcrafted furnishings nurture the soul of the user and meeting the artisan was a real pleasure. My unabashed enthusiasm inspired him to show me a chess set filled with armies of mythical creatures that also really captivated me! What could be more fun than playing chess with these incredible pieces? When you touch them you really feel them. This chess set or table would really make a statement in a room. So I ask you to ask yourself what your furnishings say about you. I hope it’s something special.

Fifty Shades of… Nope! Not Grey

50 Shades of… Nope! Not Grey… (or The Glory of Gold)
You would have had to be marooned on a desert island  for a few years if you haven’t  heard all the buzz about “50 Shades of Grey”. The book, the coming movie, the spoofs and parodies are all over the media.
Well, what about “50 Shades of Gray”?  I adore pewter-y paint colors and finishes, carrera and statuary marble, silver leaf and deep grey chenille and velvet. Gray has been the in trend and I have done some beautiful gray kitchens and baths over the last few years. As for general thoughts on the color gray? I do not love gray days. I find gray to be the color of fog and depression. Other than being used as a soft backdrop to a vibrant life,  to me, shades of gray read non-committal in a world of vivid color and the glorious contrast of black and white.
So why am I concentrating on 50 Shades of Gold? Well, because I like it better.
Gold is the color of sunshine and kings. Gold says regal and queenly. Gold is the color of warmth and comfort. Gold is the color of the perfect French fry or caramelized onion. Fields of golden wheat attest to goodness. Gold is the bounty of pirates. Goldfinger was a very cool movie!  Gold is assigned to the enjoyment of aging as in “golden years”. Yes, I love gold.

Celebration Style

table top redLast night I had the pleasure of attending a wedding celebration. The attention to detail was amazing, as can be seen by the hand sown ribbon tablecloth pictured. This reminded me of a few years back when my lovely daughter was planning her wedding celebration. The dress shopping, the table settings and most of all the cake! I remember pulling out my tape measure and explaining to the baker that a five foot cake was as big as she was! Style has be personal and comfortable.  People with great style wear their lives like they wear their clothes. There is a casual grace because it all just fits. Here is some ELISE SABATINO style. http://thebridescafe.com/index.cfm?q=elise+and+giovanni  Enjoy!!  Photos by Sara France Photography.

Inspiration….. when to go custom……..

waterjet custom tile
I love texture and I love shine…….I am looking forward to posting about this kitchen renovation project when it is done but just had to offer a peek of what is in store……
This custom waterjet glass tile created by Ray Bernard of Finishing Touches in Huntington, NY, is just what we needed to put this kitchen over the top. Sure there are all sorts of inlays and herringbones to do in a backsplash but this art deco inspired glass pattern is clean, shiny and truly out of the ordinary….

JUST LOVE!

Ah so….Grasshopper…a shade of yellow is the Ben Moore color of the year…

grasshopper nook

I just heard that LEMON SORBET is the 2013 Benjamin Moore color of the year….It made me think of this nook I designed in a Hamptons playroom to highlight a fun art piece the owner had  purchased years ago. Although she loved it, it didn’t have any real relevance in the home. I felt it needed a yellow backround. Setting the grasshopper in a color scheme and space where it could be appreciated reminded me of this quote from the movie KUNG FU.

Po: GRASSHOPPER, BE YOUR SELF. AND NEVER FEAR THUS TO BE NAKED TO THE EYES OF OTHERS. YET, KNOW THAT MAN SO OFTEN MASKS HIMSELF. THAT WHAT IS SIMPLE IS RARELY UNDERSTOOD. THE DUST OF TRUTH SWIRLS, AND SEEKS ITS OWN CRACKS OF ENTRY. AND A TREE FALLING IN THE FOREST, WITHOUT EARS TO HEAR, MAKES NO SOUND. YET IT FALLS.–KF

Although I am not a Kung Fu movie fan, some of the wisdom is inspiring to me……what is art without appreciation?
